Dill Seed Tea ~ digestive support + more! - Studio Botanica (2024)

Herbal medicine does not need to be complicated! I have had so many requests for simple digestive system support. Tummy upset, irritated bowel, cramping or flatulence are all such common symptoms these days! I often start with the most basic answers as they are often the most do-able and many times, as effective as the 'more complicated'. Dill Seed Tea is SO easy to prepare and an extremely effective herbal remedy!

It's a fact that our digestive system is very much in 'tandem' with our nervous system and our endocrine system. When we are anxious or 'uptight' or stressed out, our body tends to limit our ability for optimally digesting our foods.

Dill is a relative of caraway, anise, coriander, parsley, and carrots - all part of the apiaceae family. Dill seeds taste very similar to caraway, though slightly milder.

Did you know that Dill Seed is not technically a seed? Nope.. It's a flat, oval, dark brown whole fruits of the herb.

Dill Seed Tea is an excellent source of Calcium.

1 tablespoon dill seed = 100 mg Calcium !

It's easy to make a very simple "high Calcium tea" using dill seed!

If you think about it, we can all benefit from a cup or two of dill seed tea to calm and soothe our digestion, add calcium to support bone health and enjoy anti-microbial attributes at the same time!

Years ago, folks carried a combination of seeds wrapped in a hankie or tucked into a pocket, when attending church to freshen breath, stave off hunger pains and relieve gas. Have you ever heard of "meetin' seeds"? That's what this 'on the go' little blend was affectionately called!

Hey! I think that they were onto to something. Why not create our own blends to carry with us, during this busy life, to see us through a meeting or an appointment!? We can each make our own blends but if you want to honour the tradition, here's the 'ol time traditional recipe:

Meetin' Seeds: Dill + Caraway + Fennel seeds mixed together. That's it! All we need now is a small container, and we're set. I'm going to do this and see if I actually make use of the 'new habit'.

DILL medicine deserves an entire post. Read more about this wonderful herb here.

I know fresh must be better, but can you derive any benefit from store bought dill from the spice aisle? How long before such an herb loses its benefits?

Hello Mia. Thanks for your question. Dill seed from the grocery store is fine. Buy small quantities of herbs and use within a year. I buy a small amount from my local health food store.. and replenish every few months for freshest possible.
