Learn how to enhance a basic inexpensive evergreen wreath for the holidays! These wreath decoration ideas will take your holiday decor to the next level, whether you’re working with a fresh or faux evergreen wreath.

These sweet and simple tricks will take even the most basic of wreaths and turn it into a total showstopper.

Indoors or out, these wreath decoration ideas are simple enough for a beginner!

I love creating. There’s something particularly gratifying by making something with your own two hands and having it grace your home or gifting it to a friend.

I am so excited to share how to spruce up a basic Christmas wreath today with a few Christmas wreath decorations!

Christmas wreaths are easily accessible and inexpensive at stores like Trader Joe’s, Home Depot and Lowe’s, but they often feel a little flat and lackluster because they’re stacked for shipment and somewhat sparse to keep the price point low.

I wanted to share just how easy it is to add Christmas wreath decorations today. In fact, I’ve added pretty items to many holiday wreaths over the years, so I’ve got so many fun ideas!

Christmas Wreath Decoration Ideas

Adding in a few snips of greenery makes a basic Christmas wreath feel a lot more special. It’s amazing what a few minutes can do!

I started enhancing my wreaths because those I really love are $75-200 (Williams Sonoma and other high end stores overwhelm me with their beautiful designs).

Updating an existing evergreen wreath is easy and inexpensive – a pre-made wreath form is usually $12-$15 and half the work is already done for you.

You can use any flowers, fruits, pine cones, ornaments, or additional greenery. For one of the examples in this post, I chose thistle and eucalyptus since I had a little extra lying around from a flower arrangement and they tend to look beautiful for an extended period of time.

I’ve also added simple clementine oranges to a faux Christmas wreath to help elevate it beyond the basic. I’m excited to share these simple ideas and techniques with you today!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• Fresh Fruit – Or any of the ideas below! Add greenery, ornaments, pine cones and more!
• Greenery – Or fresh-to-dry floral elements. We used eucalyptus, thistle and more evergreen stems to fill out our fresh wreath (pictured below).
• Skewers – Small wooden skewers work well, or you can add wire to any elements you’d like to add to your wreath.

How to Add Fruit Decorations

1. If you’re adding fresh fruit, you’ll need to insert a skewer or a wire. For a skewer, just insert one end of the skewer 3/4 of the way into the fruit, as pictured. If you’re using a wire, thread it through the center of fruit (or pine cones, etc), pulling the wire out on both sides of fruit.
2. Insert into holes of wreath or near leaves, at an angle to attach snugly to the frame of the wreath. With a wire, you’ll attach both ends of the wire on the back of the wreath to add the decorative elements tightly against the wreath.

How to Add Greenery Stems to a Wreath

1. Trim stems of greenery leaving 1-2″ of stem to insert into the wreath. For eucalyptus, 6-8″ overall.
2. Work your way around the wreath inserting stems in the same direction as existing stems, tucking them under the evergreen until they feel secure. Keep in mind you can readjust spacing any time. That’s the best part – you get easy do-overs!
3. Trim flower stems or thistle to 4″ tucking them in at varying widths to stagger, again, in the same direction as existing stems. Insert them until almost flush.

• An indoor wreath doesn’t require quite as many techniques for adding and securing additional decorations. Often, you can tuck extra greenery or picks directly into the wreath base without any further efforts to attach.
• Many fruit options will dry beautifully on a wreath. However, it’s an easy and inexpensive option to change out weekly through a holiday season, too.

Wreaths can create an instant holiday feel in any area of your home. One of my favorite holiday tricks is to simply remove a piece of art work and replace it with a fresh wreath.

By using the same nail, we aren’t adding any holes to our drywall and the whole space feels infused with the warmth of the holidays.
