Chloe: Ending explained as Becky's past finally exposed (2024)

Chloe final episode spoilers follow.

The BBC's latest thrilling mystery Chloe has finally come to a head and it's actually left more questions than answers about what the hell happens next.

Starring The Crown's Erin Doherty as the mysterious and lonely Becky, fans have been enraptured as she tries to discover the truth behind the death of her childhood friend.

Turns out Chloe's seemingly perfect life was anything but that – never trust what you see on Instagram, kids.

But as she intertwines herself into Chloe's life as "Sasha", Becky finds herself getting in deeper into a conspiracy than she was ever prepared to do.

So what exactly happened to Chloe on that fateful night?

Here's everything you need to know as the show reaches its dramatic conclusion.

Was Chloe murdered?

This has been the big question for a while now, but the truth of the matter is we don't exactly know.

Chloe was clearly miserable in her marriage to the manipulative and controlling Elliot (Billy Howle), and had even created an escape plan in order to start a new life away from him.

After months of planning, Chloe seized her opportunity to leg it, with Elliot busy on stage conducting a speech.

She had intended to flee to a caravan park where she'd quietly purchased a home, with a box of cash she'd been building up. Only, in her panic, she'd forgotten the key, leaving her with nowhere to go.

Instead, she went to her parents' home, who immediately stitched her up and gave away her location after Elliot 'seemed worried' about where she was.

In a panic, she later tries to make another run for it, and Elliot joins Chloe's mother in tracking her down, and from then on… we don't particularly know anything for sure, apart from Chloe ended up dead after falling from a cliff.

Chloe's mother seems hesitant to admit that Elliot pushed her, although that seems more and more likely. First she says they arrived "just as she jumped" and then over time it's adapted to "I don't know what I saw".

Do Chloe and Elliot's friends know the truth?

Becky has infiltrated herself into Chloe's inner circle in a bid to find out the truth. But Livia (Pippa Bennett-Warner) is hesitant to listen to her pleas for help around Elliot, especially as her lies are crumbling around her.

Spurred on by Elliot, Livia has begun to distrust Becky, asking her to show her identity papers, which Becky obviously doesn't have under the name Sasha.

It's clear that Elliot has a hold over all of his mates, who are hesitant to hear the worst about him, particularly in regards to his relationship with Chloe.

Like Livia says, they've been friends since they were 15, he's practically family to her.

Richard knows more than most, and at one point was supposed to help Chloe in her get-out plan from under Elliot the night she died. But he bottled it, and it's part of the reason why he's been behaving so oddly pretty much since we met him.

Thing is, Becky always has a plan, and in a confrontation with Elliot manages to record one of his violent outbursts, before doing a runner in her car.

She later posted the video of the recording on Chloe's Instagram, outing his violent tendencies for what they are.

Livia later meets her at the caravan Chloe bought, and is shell-shocked by what she's heard and unsure who to trust. Becky then shares voicemails Elliot had left Chloe chastising Livia's parenting skills. When the pair separate on better terms, Becky gives Livia her new number as she starts again.

Who is Sasha?

Over the course of the show, Becky reinvented herself as the cooler-than-cool art elite Sasha – but it took a while for the truth about the name change to come to light, especially as her own mother, who has dementia, was often seen calling her that as well.

In a tragic twist, it's revealed that Sasha is actually the name of Becky's little sister, who drowned in the bath when she was younger.

It was this moment that truly cemented Becky's love for Chloe, who she confided in before she went away.

Therefore, when Chloe turned on Becky and cut her out, she was left devastated, but in the finale episode we discover that Chloe had felt some guilt about what happened, writing her a letter apologising.

After finding it, albeit years later, Becky finally gets some peace about their fractured friendship.
