Care for Cut Flowers and Hand-Tied Bouquets

Choosing a vase:

  • Select a vase that is the height of the stems or shorter.

  • The opening should allow the stems to sit comfortably in the vase, avoid overstuffing. We recommend 5-7 stems per 1” diameter of vase, but of course this depends on the type of bloom as head sizes and stem widths vary.

Prepping your vase:

  • Clean your vase with soap + water, then fill with clean, cool water.

  • We suggest the water level sits a little over halfway full, making sure each cut-end of the stem is submerged.

Cleaning your flowers:

  • Unwrap your bouquet.

  • Remove any excess leaves or foliage from the portion of stems being submerged in water.

  • All foliage remaining should sit above the water line. Leaves that come in contact with water can produce bacteria, and bacteria will make your flowers perish at a faster rate.

Cutting your flowers:

  • Snip at least ½” off the bottom of each stem with flower shears or sharp scissors.

  • Make sure they’re sharp and clean - dull shears can damage the stem and dirty shears can spread bacteria. We wipe ours down daily with rubbing alcohol.

  • You can cut as much of the stem as you’d like, but we recommend a length that both allows the stem to hit the bottom of your vase and the petals of the shortest stem to fall over its edge.

We like our flowers to sit at different heights as it allows each bloom to shine. Have fun experimenting with different stem lengths!

Arranging your flowers:

  • After cutting, immediately place your flowers in the water-filled vase. This will help with maximum hydration.

  • Feel free to untie your bouquet and play with arranging them yourself or simply slip the tied RC bouquet into your preferred vase.

  • Change the water daily to avoid bacteria build-up. You may even add 1-2 drops of color-safe bleach to the water to help keep it clean.

Other tips:

  • Keep your blooms looking their best by keeping them from direct sunlight and the path of AC vents.

  • Be aware of the temperature in your home or office. If you like your space on the warmer side, know this may cause your flowers to fade more quickly.

  • Like most living things, different flower varieties have varying life spans. Simply remove stems that no longer look healthy. If not removed, the bacteria from expired flowers may cause others to fade more rapidly.
