Butterfly pea flower, scientifically called cl*toria ternatea, is an ornamental plant native to Asia, Southern and Eastern Africa, and Madagascar.

The deep blue to purple color of these flowers is due to an anthocyanin called delphinidin. Anthocyanins are known for their antioxidant properties and are commonly used in traditional medicines and Ayurvedic preparations.

Butterfly pea flowers also contain other antioxidants such as kaempferol, p-Coumaric acid, and ternatins.

What are butterfly pea flowers used for?

Butterfly pea flowers tend to change color when the acidity of pea flower tea changes. As such, they are a favorite among bartenders and used for specialty co*cktails. Other uses include:
