I have worked with very talented and commited employees figuring out what their professional development plan would look like. I found it helpful to ask them to describe (and imagine) the future they want - say if they would like to lead a team, what does that team do? how does it add value? what unique problem does it solve? It is one thing to aspire for growth for one's self versus the acceleration achieved by thinking about the value you add to your customer and and the influence you could have to the community. The high potential employees who led with a deep desire to serve have seen amazing career growth and movement.
