How to figure out how big of an art piece should go on a wall? ›

When hanging wall art, know the golden rules surrounding width and height. First, art should be between 4/7 and ¾ as wide as the furniture it's above. Second, the center of the piece should be about 58” high – that's the standard height for paintings in an art gallery.

In looking at the overall wall space, your artwork should take up two-thirds to three-fourths of the wall. The same is true of gallery walls, they should take up the same or even more wall space than one large statement piece should.

If you are hanging art on a blank wall, use the three eights rule. The “three eights” refers to the blank space you want on either side of the art, and to figure out what size art you need for that to happen, multiply the width of your wall with 0.57.

Creatively add size to it. For example, you could use wall paint to create borders around it and visually extend its size on the wall. Or, have your picture framed and an extra thick mat for a larger footprint on the wall.

Start by measuring the width and height of your wall and then multiply them by both 0.60 and 0.75. This will give you the range of canvas print sizes that will suit the space. For example: If you have a blank wall that is 9 feet tall and 5 feet wide, you would multiply both 9 and 5 by 0.6 and 0.75.
