How much $$ do you give for a Sweet 16?
It is my DH's nieces Sweet 16 in June. We are definately giving her cash, but not sure how much. Last night DH says he wants to give her $500!!!
I told him he was INSANE!!!! Because then we have to give that to his other niece and nephew when they turn 16. Not to mention there is another baby on the way in that family. In MY family I've got 2 nieces, 2 nephew's and twins on the way!!!!
He told me that I am CHEAP! $500! That's nuts! Plus I am helping them with the centerpieces, and buying/cooking a tray of food for the party that will cost anywhere from $75-$100 depending if I make it myself or not.
What are your thought? How much would you give?
We usually spend $50-$60 on a normal birthday.
TIA!!!!

Re: How much $$ do you give for a Sweet 16?
if you normally give 50-60 for a normal birthday, i would do 100-150 for a sweet 16, especially if you are helping to make stuff and help set up. imho, 500 is a lot, and more of the amount you'd give to someone close for a wedding than for just a sweet 16.

I agree. I think $100 - $150 is quite enough!

Compromise and do half. I would personally give $150...but since he wants to be so generous (don't you just love men! ) give $250. That's still very generous and you're contributing time and energy as well.

imo, $500 would be appropriate for a wedding, not a sweet 16. i would give about $150.

I am glad that you are all on my side!
I will have to discuss this further with him. Maybe we will settle on $200-$250! Which I still think is NUTS!!!!
Thanks for the responses!

it looks like your DH has a very big heart and goes out of his way to make another feel really happy but that's just WAY too much. wish he was my uncle - hahaha! she's only 16 yrs old. she's still a teen. i mean if you give $500 to a sweet 16er then how much will yuo give her when she weds?? i think i would give maybe $100 - $150. that to me is plenty enough.

Re: How much $$ do you give for a Sweet 16?
I have the same issue with my FI.
He is very generous with presents for his family.
I think $150 -$200 is a more appropriate present.

$500??????
Is DH accepting applications for new niece's? If he is the sign me up! LOL
Seriously though... $100-$150 is plenty.
I know that we won't even get $500 from half the people at our wedding LOL
