Basil Seed Saving - Gardening Australia (2024)

SERIES 33 | Episode 03

Jane explains how to save basil seeds to grow your own next season.

Once basil has finished its growing season it sends out long flower stems above the leaves. Each flower along the stem will produce tiny black seeds that can be collected and sown to produce lots more basil.

To collect seeds

  1. 1. Wait for the flowers to start turning dry and brown.
  2. 2. Snip off flower stems.
  3. 3. Place into a paper bag and close.
  4. 4. The tiny black seeds will eventually fall out and into the bag.
  5. 5. Seeds can be sown direct in beds or pots after winter or start growing seedlings earlier in a sheltered spot like a greenhouse.
