What Are Winged Termites?
Individuals may notice termites in and around homes throughout the spring and summer months. Swarmers, also called alates, have wings because their role in colonies is to take flight during mating season, find new nesting sites, and reproduce. They are often found flying around windows and doors trying to get outside. Seeing winged termites in the home is a sure sign of infestation.
Attraction to Light
Some species of termites swarm late in the afternoon and early evening. Like most nocturnal insects, the pests will be drawn to light sources around the home, such as porch lamps, motion lights, and light reflected from inside. It is common to see swarms of alates around utility lights, as well.
