Animal Crossing: New Horizons Happy Home Paradise DLC - How To Remodel Villagers' Homes (2024)

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Happy Home Paradise DLC - How To Remodel Villagers' Homes (1)

You may have heard that it's now possible to remodel your Animal Crossing: New Horizons villagers' ugly, gift-filled homes on your island. It's true! Buuuut... you'll have to jump through a few hoops first.

Luckily for you, we've figured out those hoops! So, without further ado, here's how to unlock the ability to remodel your villagers' home interiors.

How do I unlock the ability to remodel my villagers' homes?

You'll need to finish 30 Happy Home Paradise vacation home designs, which is considered "finishing the game". You'll know when you've done it because you'll get to watch the credits. You'll then have the ability to remodel their home interiors — just talk to Tom Nook at Resident Services, and he'll say that your design talents have convinced him to offer a "home-design consulting service".

Do I need the Happy Home Paradise DLC?

Yes, sorry! Although if you previously bought the DLC through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, and then cancelled your subscription, you'll apparently have access to anything that you unlocked back on your island... which probably includes the ability to redesign villager homes. We'll update this once we found out for sure!

How do I remodel their homes?

Speak to Tom Nook at Resident Services (once you've unlocked the home-design consulting service) and select "Let's talk homes", then "A resident's home". You'll get to choose which one, and then Tom Nook will take you to the house in question.

My starter villagers still have the basic houses — can I just change them to their unique room design?

The first five villagers to move onto your island will have the basic, wood furniture-filled houses instead of their character's "unique" design. The next five will automatically have the unique room instead. Some people have either gone to the lengths of evicting all their early villagers, while others have moved them out and back in.

But now you don't have to do that! Just speak to Isabelle, tell her that you have concerns about a resident, and select "The way their home looks" — it will immediately change it to that particular villager's "unique" design!

Are there objects I have to use?

No, but there are "recommended" objects from that villager's unique room design. You can use this to get a good sense of their style — or ignore it altogether.

Can I change the room size?

Unfortunately not!

Can I redesign the exterior?

Yes, including roof, door, and the exterior. The only thing you can't do is make the house bigger than it already is.

Can I change what song is playing?

Yes. If you place down any kind of music-playing object, you can select a song (here's the full list of K.K. Slider songs, for reference). That villager's favourite song will appear in the "recommended" category.

When does the redesign happen?

It will take place overnight, which is to say that the redesign will be "finished" at 5am on the next day — though, of course, you won't be able to see it until that villager wakes up.

How much does it cost?

It costs 9,000 Bells to remodel a villager's home.

What happens to all their objects?

When you remodel a house, the "recommended" category will include everything that you've ever given them, as long as they had it on display at some point. Their objects — anything you don't use — will remain in this storage limbo.

Wait, how do I change my home now?

The ability to change your own house's exterior can now be found in the same section as the villager home remodel option. Speak to Tom Nook at Resident Services (once you've unlocked the home-design consulting service) and select "Let's talk homes", then "A resident's home".

Are there Nook Miles rewards for remodelling villager homes?

Yes — you'll get 1,000 Miles for redecorating a home every time, and you can do up to ten a day (if you have the maximum amount of villagers).

And finally, Where to Buy Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Nintendo Switch, if for some reason you haven't yet picked up the game, and How To Buy The Happy Home Paradise DLC, too!

As an avid player and enthusiast of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I'm well-versed in various aspects of the game, including the recent addition of the Happy Home Paradise DLC and the ability to remodel villagers' homes. I can provide comprehensive insights and guidance on unlocking, executing, and understanding the intricacies of this feature.

Here's a breakdown of the concepts mentioned in the article regarding remodeling villagers' homes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons:

  1. Unlocking the Ability to Remodel Villagers' Homes:

    • Achieve completion of 30 Happy Home Paradise vacation home designs to reach the endgame, which is indicated by the rolling of credits. This achievement enables the ability to remodel villagers' home interiors. Speak to Tom Nook at Resident Services after meeting this criterion.
  2. Happy Home Paradise DLC Requirement:

    • The ability to remodel villagers' homes is part of the Happy Home Paradise DLC. Access to this feature is contingent upon having the DLC.
  3. Process of Remodeling:

    • Consult Tom Nook at Resident Services (after unlocking the home-design service) and choose "Let's talk homes" and then "A resident's home" to initiate the remodeling process for a specific villager.
  4. Upgrading Starter Villagers' Houses:

    • Early island inhabitants might initially have basic houses. To update their homes to their unique designs, talk to Isabelle, express concerns about the resident, and select "The way their home looks."
  5. Recommended Objects and Room Design:

    • Villagers have recommended objects based on their unique room design, though using these is optional. It helps in understanding their style preferences.
  6. Room Size Modification:

    • Unfortunately, it's not possible to change the room size during the remodeling process.
  7. Exterior Redesign:

    • The exterior of the villager's house can be redesigned, including the roof, door, and overall appearance, except for increasing the house's size.
  8. Changing Music:

    • Players can alter the song played in the villager's house by placing a music-playing object. The villager's favorite song will be available in the "recommended" category.
  9. Redesign Timing and Cost:

    • Redesigns take place overnight and conclude at 5 am the next day. The cost for remodeling a villager's home is 9,000 Bells.
  10. Treatment of Villager Objects:

    • Objects given to villagers will be suggested during remodeling if they were displayed at any point. Unused items will be retained in storage.
  11. Player Home Redesign:

    • The option to change the player's home exterior can also be accessed through Tom Nook at Resident Services in the same section as the villager home remodel option.
  12. Nook Miles Rewards:

    • Players receive 1,000 Nook Miles for each home redecoration and can perform up to ten remodels daily (if the maximum number of villagers is reached).

This comprehensive understanding of the remodeling process in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, along with expertise in various other game features and mechanics, allows me to offer guidance and insights for players seeking assistance in enjoying the game to its fullest potential.
