Ever heard of alum powder? Frequently used in pickling and canning recipes to maintain the crispness of fruits and vegetables, alum powder (also known as potassium aluminum sulfate) happens to be great for encouraging cut flowers to take more water than when left completely alone.

Hydrangeas are unusual in that their petals can drink water. If they're looking sad, spray the heads with water or dunk them in a sink or bucket of water for an extra dose of hydration. Before designing with hydrangeas, recut each stem and dip the bottom 1/2 inch into alum powder.

But did you know that it helps prolong your blooms too? Especially a bloom with a woody stem, such as hydrangeas or roses. Florists often freshly cut the stems of these flowers, and dip the edge into alum powder before placing the stem in water. This helps the flowers draw more water.

How does baking soda help flowers? ›

If flowers are exposed to too high or low water acidity, they will die faster. Baking soda is ideal for cut blooms because it creates neutrality; it's not too acidic or alkaline. Ensure that you have a clean vase and water, remove any foliage beneath the waterline, and then add a teaspoon of baking soda into the water.

Flowers can be dried in several materials. A mixture of 2 parts borax and 1 part sand is an effective drying medium. The sand should be fine, clean, and dry. While the sand-borax mix is an effective drying agent, the weight of the sand tends to flatten the flowers.

Typically, fresh flower bouquets can come with a packet of plant food to add to the water in the vase. When adding the food, it should be mixed well. Add more flower food every two to three days after changing the water. In a pinch, bleach can act as a preservative.

Homemade Flower Preservative

Home mixes can be as effective as commercial preservatives. This easy-to-make recipe is my favorite. 1 teaspoon sugar. 1 teaspoon household bleach. 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice.

You can also keep cut hydrangeas from wilting by using alum powder. Dip the stems into alum and put them into a clean vase. Make sure to mark the alum container “for hydrangeas only,” as you do not want to use it for anything else. You can find alum in the spice aisle of your local grocers or HERE.

Sugar will provide nourishment to the flowers, while acid can keep the pH level low to reduce wilting and help the flowers absorb water better. The most common antibacterial products used for fresh flowers are bleach and spirits, such as vodka or gin.
