Airbnb makeup stains and how to remove them. As hosts, we’ve all struggled with this! I’ve created a guide to keeping your towels white & bright!
During my first years as an Airbnb host, I found myself spending a lot of time (and bleach) trying to salvage towels stained with foundation and mascara. Although I provided makeup remover wipes, many guests would just use my fresh white towels instead. Hey, easy right?
I want to share a little trick that has helped me with my quest to keep my Airbnb towels white. It’s just a simple, decorative little sign in the bathroom to help ‘remind guests’ to not destroy your towels.
After so many towels being stained, I decided to design a polite ‘help us save out towels’ sign, and it works! Pair with a stylish frame, and voila your towels are saved! Really, you can stop Airbnb guests from staining your towels. Imagine!
My thick, lush, white Turkish bath towels have been stained by guests many times. They’ve been sprayed, bleached, soaked and washed. Despite all of this, they have held up beautifully for more than two years, only getting softer each wash. Since putting up the sign they thankfully are not getting stained anymore! Use Makeup Wipes…Please!
There is a fine line between being rude or politely mentioning something. I think most guests are innocently wiping their makeup off on towels without really thinking twice. But, If you provide a nice makeup remover, and a gentle sign, they will use it. I’ve chosen Neutrogena singlesfor my guests’ make removal needs. It’s a recognizable brand and gentle on the eyes. I’ve tried placing the bigger bulk version of wipes in the bathroom, but guests would often leave with the whole thing. With this option, you can ration out a couple of wipes per day. If you buy a bulk 3 pack from Amazon they are about .25 each. With this trick, you can stop Airbnb guests from staining your towels once and for all.
Airbnb Makeup Stains 101
For those Airbnb makeup stains, you already have, treating them as fast as possible is key.
Immediately spray with a stain remover spray, like Spray and wash or Oxy Clean for at least an hour or overnight.
Let the load of wash pre-soak in cold water for at least an hour with laundry detergent and a cup of bleach.
Wash and dry normally and check for stain residue when the load is finished. If there is still yellowing or brown residue. Keep aside until you have a big enough load of stained towels.
For this next load, of stain rebels, you can be more aggressive with the bleach and soak it overnight ( at this point the towels are almost graduating to cleaning rags, so it’s do or die) You can put an end to this stain cycle with a $3 Etsy printable and a few make-up remover wipes. Try liquid dish soap: For fresh stains that you've blotted, add a drop of dish detergent and rub it into the fabric. Follow that with a rinse of warm water.
Some of our most experienced Airbnb cleaners in Denver have suggested pretreating the fabric with dishwasher detergent. Dishwasher detergent is a powerful degreaser that dissolves fat, a significant component in makeup. Let the white towel soak for 10 minutes before washing and wash with extra hot water and bleach.
If you're able to catch the stain when it first occurs, pretreat it with a few drops of liquid detergent directly on the area.After it's had a few minutes to soak in, throw the towel in a hot wash with detergent and bleach.
The most effective solution to remove mascara, lipstick or foundation stains from clothes is Ariel liquid, as it has surfactants that remove anything greasy from fabrics, especially in hot temperatures.

To remove yellow stains from white towels, start by pre-treating the affected areas with a paste of baking soda and water.Then, wash the towels with oxygen bleach or borax. You can also try using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water or lemon juice to brighten the fabric.
You shouldn't be responsible for washing anything in terms of sheets and towels, and the host won't expect you to. You should check the description of the Airbnb and ask the host if you are concerned, however.

According to one hotel management, they first treat all stains on the laundry. Then, they toss them in a big pot full of a mixture of baking soda, laundry detergent or soap, and cold water. The towels are then boiled for around half an hour, wrung out, and thrown into the laundry machine.
She recommended keeping a bucket full of Oxy-Clean-spiked water in a cabinet or closet, and tossing any used towels in there. Then, when the bucket is full, simply dump the contents into your washing machine and wash the towels in hot water.
Makeup and skin care products: Many different skin care or body care products have ingredients that can leave discolored spots on towels. And many makeup products leave behind bleached spots or residues that are difficult to wash out.
There are a handful of different brands out there, but the idea is the same: you wet a towel with water, swipe it across your face, and poof! All of your makeup is gone. Even better, you can throw the towel in with your laundry and keep using it for months.
Wet a clean cloth with cold water and blot the stain. Press the tip of the Tide to Go Instant Stain Remover onto the makeup stain several times to release some of the stain remover solution. Rub the tip gently across the stain to remove it. If necessary, add more liquid and continue to rub gently.
If you start seeing odd stains on fabrics that haven't been around your acne treatment, you might chalk it up to bleach mishaps in the laundry room. However, it might be that your pajamas, washcloths, or towels are transferring benzoyl peroxide to other items in your hamper.
