What optional extras are available through ahm?

ahm provides optional coverage to cover travellers taking a range of different domestic and international holidays. Some of the options you get include:

  1. Snow sports cover: this optional extra covers you for accidents and injuries when you’re skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. It also covers you for the closure of ski slopes, bad weather and avalanches.
  2. Increased luggage cover: this add-on is designed for people toting around highly-valuable items on their holidays, such as expensive mobile phones or laptops. You can increase the individual limits on your valuables up to $4,500, but the overall value of the items you’re taking can’t exceed $6,000 if you want to be fully covered.
  3. Motorcycle and moped riding cover: if you’re thinking about tackling your holiday destination on two wheels and still purchase coverage with ahm, you’ll need to take out this additional package to be covered if the unforeseen happens while riding a motorcycle or moped.
  4. Cruise cover: this add-on allows you to extend your coverage to a domestic or international cruise holiday and get protection for incidentals such as onboard medical costs and needing to evacuate your cruise liner due to a medical emergency.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through ahm?

ahm has a list of general exclusions, which include the following:

  1. Losses caused by terrorist attacks or acts of war
  2. Competing in a competitive sport, such as professional rugby
  3. Breaking the law
  4. Accidents caused because you intentionally put yourself in danger
  5. Ignoring government warnings and travelling to a restricted country
  6. Accidental death claims if you die by suicide
  7. Travelling against medical advice
  8. Accidents caused by alcohol or drug consumption

If you’ve found a policy that draws your eye, ensure you review ahm’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of ahm travel insurance

What we like

Discounts for ahm members

ahm is one of a few organisations to offer a discount on travel insurance policies if you’re a member. This allows you to get up to 10% off your policy when you buy it online.

Cover for COVID-19-related costs

ahm offers cover for COVID-19-related costs, whether it’s cancelling your holiday due to a positive diagnosis or needing medical treatment due to being struck down by the coronavirus.

Flexible cancellation cover

While ahm includes $3,000 for cancellation-related cover in its policies, it allows you to opt for more if you need it, making their plans quite flexible no matter if you’re heading to Belgium or Broome.

What we don't like

High excesses

Compared to some of its competitors who offer travel insurance excesses of between $150 and $200, ahm makes you pay $250 if you need to file a claim. However, you can reduce it for a higher premium.

Limited travel delay coverage

For travel delays, ahm provides up to $2,000 in coverage, which is lower than what’s offered by many other travel insurance companies.

Low luggage claim limits

While some providers allow you to claim back up to $15,000 if your bags are stolen, go missing or are damaged, ahm only allows you to be reimbursed up to $8,000.

Types of travel insurance

International

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

Domestic

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

One-way

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

Cruise

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Seniors

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Ski

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Families

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

Couples

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

How do I make a claim through ahm?

Making a claim is pretty straightforward with ahm, as they allow you to complete the whole process online. You’ll need to follow these steps once you log in to their portal:

  • Provide ample information about the claimable incident
  • Detail what expenses you’re claiming
  • Upload the documentation you need for them to back up your claim
  • Provide your financial details for your reimbursem*nt
  • Review your application and submit it

ahm says it can take up to ten days for applications to be processed and you have 28 days to return and amend your application after you’ve submitted it. However, altering your application will slow the process.

How much will my ahm travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance premiums vary from one person to the next based on several factors, including:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your chosen destination
  • The level of coverage you buy
  • Any optional extras you need
  • Pre-existing medical conditions you need to disclose
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy

What are the difference between single, annual and one-way trip travel insurance?

Single-trip policies only cover one trip to a destination and back. Annual multi-trip policies cover many trips annually (often up to 60 travel days per trip). If you are taking a one-way journey without the option of returning home, you may get travel insurance that will cover you for the whole length of your trip (up to a year). It's relatively uncommon to get an additional year of coverage.
