The Pros and Cons of Organic Fertilizers

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Organic Fertilizers (4)

There are many advantages to using organic fertilizers. That’s why we, at Emerald Lawns, use them as often as we can. We prefer them. However, there are some disadvantages too. In this article, we’ll go over the advantages and disadvantages of using organic fertilizers so you are aware of the reasons why we may occasionally opt to use a synthetic fertilizer.

Advantages of using organic fertilizers

  • Balances the soil ecosystem
  • Boosts plant health naturally
  • They’re all-natural
  • The process of decomposition requires no chemical intervention
  • Organic fertilizers don’t upset the balance in the soil because they don’t leave behind any artificial compounds
  • Delivers nutrients in a slow, but sustainable rate
  • Prevents over-fertilization

Disadvantages of using organic fertilizers

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Organic Fertilizers (5)

The biggest disadvantage of using an organic fertilizer is that it may not contain primary nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorous or potassium, also known as NPK. Manure-based fertilizers contain these nutrients and are still considered organic. However, many others don’t contain significant quantities of NPK. They’re just soil amendments.

The biggest drawback to organic fertilizers are:

  • NPK directly affects plant growth by feeding the plant
  • Some organics can take longer to green up the lawn
  • It often takes longer to help your plants grow

With organic fertilizer, you’re relying on either the beneficial microorganisms in the soil or those in the product to convert nitrogen and feed the plant. The results will come but maybe not as quickly as you want them.

If you are willing to be patient, it’s best to go with an organic fertilizer.

It will help rebuild your soil so that it’s at its healthiest. It may take longer to get the end results you want, but they will be well worth it in the end.
