Money is a controversial topic in Christian circles. Some believers feel that any rich Christian has missed his or her way. Some go as far as saying that such a person will certainly roast in hell. They believe that is the moral of the story of the rich man and Lazarus told in Luke 16:19-31.
One of those who belong to this first school of thought (though not to the extreme point mentioned above) is Christian activist, Shane Claiborne. In one of his writings, he asserts that, “Asking if it is okay for Christians to be rich is a strange question. It is like asking if it is okay for Christians to overeat, or watch too much TV. It may be permissible, but that doesn’t mean it is a good idea.” Shane believes that if we follow the Scriptures, we will give away any surplus we get. He cites the Lord’s prayer where Christians are admonished to ask God to give us “this day our daily bread,” the emphasis being on “TODAY.” (See that article here.)
Also, Christian Universalist author, Thomas Whittemore wrote in his “Notes and Illustrations of the Parables of the New Testament” that Jesus did not promise his followers “worldly ease, riches or honors: but, … pain, poverty, disgrace and death.”
Other Christians preach and actively seek means of improving their financial situation. Some in the latter group claim that poverty is a disgrace and should not be associated with followers of Jesus. The whole thing has devolved into what is often derogatorily called the prosperity gospel, with the likes of Joel Osteen and Creflo Dollar labelled as its preachers. An article on this issue posted on haroldherring.com and written by Larry H. has the following statements:
“Poverty is not godly and it certainly isn’t biblical.”
“God’s Word does not advocate poverty for anyone!”
“There is nothing sacred, holy, or happy about being poor.”
And so the arguments rage with both sides flinging accusations and sometimes, insults, at each other. I have no intention of joining the fray here. My concern is to present, by God’s grace, the right approach to seeing and handling whatever money we have, be it little or much.
I do need to stress, though, that money cannot be good or bad all by itself. It is what we make of it that it becomes to us. And neither poverty nor prosperity is a proof of piety. One can be poor and covetous. In like manner, one can be rich and yes, covetous, wanting more and more, scheming to snatch what others have. What matters, therefore, is our personal relationship with God, daily living in obedience to His word by His grace or working out our “salvation with fear and trembling” as Apostle Paul puts it in Phillipians 2:12 (KJV).

In the light of the foregoing, here are some proper ways a Christian should regard and use money.
6 CORRECT CHRISTIAN VIEWS ABOUT MONEY
1. Our identity or sense of worth should not come from how much money we have. Similarly, the value we place on our fellow human beings should not be determined by how rich or poor they are.
“My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, ‘You sit here in a good place,’ while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, ‘Sit down at my feet, have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?'” – James 2:1-4
You should not despise yourself or anyone else due to lack of worldly goods and do not exalt people unduly because they own these. We are all special in God’s sight, so special that He sent His One and Only Son to die for us (John 3:16).
2. “Our” money is really not ours. It all belongs to God. We are God’s stewards of our money and whatever else we have. Right from the Old Testament, we are told that the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, all the silver and gold are His (Psalm 24:1, Haggai 2:8). Moses warned the children of Israel not to boast that they got wealth by their own power and wisdom because these things were graciously given by God (Deutronomy 8:17 & 18). Also, when David and the Israelites had given generously towards the building of the temple by his son, Solomon, this is what he declared:
“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. O LORD our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own.” – 1 Chronicles 29:14 & 16.

And in the New Testament, Paul asks us these incisive questions:
“For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?” – 1 Corinthians 4:7 (NIV)
3. Following from No. 2 above, God should be consulted and should have the last say on how our money is spent. In the Old Testament, God specified tithes, offerings and acts of benevolence for His people like leaving gleanings of harvest in their fields. He gave clear instructions about the support of temple services, priests and Levites plus care for strangers, widows, orphans and the destitute thereby. The people were taught these by the priests and the Levites as part of the Law. The whole book of Leviticus is devoted to these commands.

In the New Testament, we have the indwelling Holy Spirit to guide us.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” – Romans 8:14 (KJV)
Personally, I am led to do all of the above, not in the ceremonial sense as in the Old Testament though. There’s so much need in the world today and I believe it’s a privilege to be able to contribute to meeting it. I also remember the scripture that says, “whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” – 2 Corinthians 9:6.
When God directs us, we won’t waste our money, spend it selfishly or lavish it on base desires and dissipation. Issues like gambling and living an obscenely opulent lifestyle, especially in the midst of dire poverty, call to question who is inspiring our use of money.

4. Our affection should be for God, not for money. The Bible teaches us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, our mind and our strength and to love our neighbour as ourselves. Our Lord Jesus called these the greatest commandments in the Law on which all else rest (Matthew 22:35-40). We are also warned that “the love of money is the root of all evil” – (1 Timothy 6:10 – KJV). When we begin to cherish or idolise money, our hearts begin to harden towards God and our fellow human beings.
5. Our confidence should be in God, not in our money or any earthly wealth. I so appreciate this charge made by Apostle Paul to Timothy.
“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” – 1 Timothy 6:17 (NIV).

6. We should see money as a servant to be sent on errands. This is related to No. 4 above. We should be detached from it. Pursuing and accumulating it shouldn’t be the driving force of our lives. We should send it where God wants it to solve problems, not only where it can be multiplied or replenish itself. It shouldn’t become our Master, controlling our lives.

We need the spirit of contentment. Paul exemplified this for us beautifully.
“… I have learned how to get along happily whether I have much or little. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of contentment in every situation, whether it be a full stomach or hunger, plenty or want” – Philippians 4:11 & 12 (TLB).
God who helped Paul to do this can help us to inculcate the same spirit.
PRAYER:
My Lord and my God, help me to always acknowledge tthat all I have is from you. May I look to you alone for my sustenance and use whatever money you put in my care according to your leading, supporting the spread of the gospel and sharing liberally with those in need. Deliver me from every form of covetousness and help me to live a contented life that honours You. These I pray, dear Lord, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Money is good… The bible says Job had a lot of wealth and he was the greatest in the East (Job1:3). But it shouldn’t make us to fix our eyes on money… “Seek ye first the kingdom and his righteousness and every other thing will be added into you.”(Mat 6:33) Our job is just to fix our eyes on Jesus and his righteousness. For THE LOVE OF MONEY is the root of all evil.

This is a great post! I love that you’ve shown how money on it’s own isn’t evil, but instead the state of the heart is what makes it evil or good. You are right, all the money belongs to God and we are just called to be good stewards of it. I would add that if someone is blessed with riches, you are then called to do much good with those riches.

This is great! I like how you focus on having God guide us on money rather than making a broad statement. Everyone has the same calls you listed, but there are differences as well that are up to God.

Your post reminded me of Proverbs 30:7-9:7 Two things I ask of you;
deny them not to me before I die:
8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying;
give me neither poverty nor riches;
feed me with the food that is needful for me,
9 lest I be full and deny you
and say, “Who is the Lord?”
or lest I be poor and steal
and profane the name of my God.This individual seemed to want a nice healthy balance:
—He didn’t want to be poor, as he knew that would tempt him to curse God.
—He didn’t want to be rich, because he knew that would tempt him to not depend on God.This seems to strike a nice balance we should pursue with money.

Great post! It’s easy to get wrapped up in loving money more than you love God, I love how you addressed this issue and tied each point back into God. One thing I think could be added regarding being stewards is that just because it’s Gods money doesn’t mean we give 100% of it back because I know some people think that way. We have to understand that our income is his provision and we need to be taking care of our families first. Again, great post, and great insight. I love your blog!

You’ve said it all Ma. This is really nice. Money as you said is not all good or bad by itself but what we use it for is what determines. I would also like to add the means through which we obtain it matters because people in our world today do all sorts of ill-mannered and uncultured things just to get Money and this is leading many to eternal damnation. Wealth given to us by God should be used rightly and for the right things. To help those in need around us, put into our church and community, help the sick and downcast, help somebody’s career grow and a whole lot of things that will glorify God that men may see his light shining through you to them. Our wealth musnt be to show off and wear the most glamorous clothes, it’s about how we use it to reach out to people and preach the gospel through it as Christians. Cause through reaching out we might be saving a soul who will admire your generousity as a Christian and desire to be one. So let’s all make use of our God given wealth (not one gotten through covetousness oo) to the glory of God.

Well put Edith – money is touchy, but the more we spend on building a solid relationship with our Creator Lord, the less we will idolize money – and the more time spent in His Grace the more desire we will have to labor for His kingdom on earth… and in the end that is worth more than money

I think in the right mindset, money can be a tool for building up God’s kingdom. If you make a lot of money, God is going to hold you more accountable therefore you should be giving it to help others and kingdom work instead of greedily holding it.

Truly ma, many Christians have decided to settle for poverty, all in the name of avoiding hell. It so baffles me how people especially Christians “filled with Holy Spirit” will settle for poverty. They go the extent of telling you what Jesus said in narrating how easy it will be for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter God’s Kingdom. Larry H.has said it all. There is no good in being poor and it’s never God’s wish nor desire for His children to be poor. I’m solidly in agreement with the six angles you supplied in here ma, as how we Believing Christians should view money. I think why some consider it ill to be rich or wealthy as a child of God is because of one of the mentioned points – which is how some of we Christians serve this money of a thing and even run on an errand for it instead of the other way round. Some, just as you rightly pointed it out, use it in weighing people’s worth. But still, i think one shouldn’t remain in darkness because his brother has possibly chosen to remain in darkness. I just wish that many believing Christians will comes across this write-up, and read it with digestion. Because it will go a long way to better their thinking and view about money. It is actually a big taboo for a real Christian to be poor and beg for bread. Our heavenly Father already said that Gold and silver are His, so why should we feel because am rich I will go to hell… We should be rich and never let it get into our heads because God gave it to us not by our own power or strength. So, we must use that same money for Kingdom advancement and also help the poor … Nice work. More power to your elbow!

We will all return to dust someday and would leave everything behind. Money is for God, we own nothing initially. Though Money is useful, it can also ruin someone if not used wisely.

Great piece. For me, it is not bad for Christians to have money but the issue is how they use the money. Some rich Christians opress their fellow poor Christians while some use money for evil things.Christians should learn how to use their wealth in the right way like reaching the needy etc

The subject of money has increasingly become a controversial issue especially in Christendom. Many a Christian strongly clings to the view that real Christians should not at all be rich. For me, it’s sheer ignorance. And that is why many Christians continue to wallow in penury. The fact remains that money cannot be evil in itself. It is what we make of it that it becomes to us. We are God’s children and the Bible tells us that silver and gold belong to him. We ought therefore to be rich, but never allow it to get into our head.

It not about having the money but whether we adore and worship it matters. Many have fallen prey to this and ended up ruining their lives.

Thank you very much ma for this timely post. I never believed poverty was holy. While growing up, I was taught it was a curse becuz of all the deprivation and insult that is associated with it. Money must not rule us, rather we should have control over it. God bless u, Ma!

Money is good but the love of it is what is bad. When you love it excessively, it becomes an idol to you. Thhat’s when it’s very bad. We all know that the love of money is the root of all evil. That is indeed a very true saying??

Money matters!
As rightly stated above, money is not bad, but the love of it. With or without wealth, we must be faithful to God knowing fully well that we have all we need through Christ Jesus. I believe in a child of God being rich. God doesn’t encourage suffering all the time, but sometimes He uses situations to teach us lessons. Where we are and what we are, God is aware of. let me quickly chip in something.
i think that without money, the gospel won’t reach places that’s not been reached. as humans we need money, a lot of it because our needs and wants never finish. i don’t think it wrong 4 a Christian to have too much money but its wrong for a christian not to put his money to good use. “good use” i mean using your money to bless other Christians and none Christians, using your money to support the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ . - Uzor, Ogechukwu Juliet

Nice piece, Ma. A lot of Christians get this money issue mixed up. But I feel we are to serve God with all our substance, including our money. So He should dictate how it is made and how it is spent.

Thanks for the lovely directives MA, I most say that am enlightened the more by reading this writeup. Of a truth it’s never a bad idea for Christians to b rich because God has promised to bless us with every good and perfect gift which He is aware that it will b of greater help to us down here on earth to officiate well and work effectively in His ministry. The fact remains that many thought that being rich as a Christian is not really favourable blc, just like the Bible said that money is the root of all evil, meanwhile, someone’s thinking can easily be diverted when flowing with money. To me, I think money management should be taught to majority of Christians because that’s where the problem lies

This is really a difficult one. Our concern should be more on pleasing God rather than struggling over whether we are allowed to be very rich or not. My own idea is that we shouldn’t see money as our God because some do that. May God help us

Aunty, these are really correct views of a Christian about money. Being rich as a Christian does not make one a bad person or bad leader but how you spend your money. We should use whatever we have to glorify.God.
Covetousness is what God abhors as stated in his commandment, “thou shall not covet thy neighbours’ goods”. So a Christian does not have to be poor or look wretched for him to be good and the earlier we as Christians start seeing money from this view, the better it will be for us. Most Christians see money as the root of all evil. They believe that no rich person can be a good Christian. It all depends in how it’s spent and what it’s used for. No Christian is the maker of wealth, it’s the Lord that makes provision for all. Thank you ma for sharing these views.
