52 Money Save Ways: Week 8: Cut The Cable

While many people don’t have cable now because they can’t afford it or don’t get around to watching TV that often, you can also save a ton of money by turning yours off. Of course, you should only do this if you are not on a contract.

What will you do for keeping up with your favorite shows if you cut the cable off? There are many options available now for this. You should keep your wireless internet to enjoy them, but they are much cheaper options than cable or satellite TV. (be sure to read below on a link on how you can stream movies/tv for free)

Netflix: For $7.95 a month, you can stream hundreds of TV shows, movies and documentaries. There is a ton of children’s TV shows available as well. Each person in your home gets their own “profile” that starts to customize for each member of the household based on what they watch. Netflix even offers a free trial month. We use this in our home and it is on all ipads, tablets, laptops, game systems, etc. I LOVE Nextflix. This weekend I spent a lot of time catching up on old episodes of Law & Order/SVU. I also heard that House Of Cards ( a popular show?) is now available on Netflix as well! If you want more information, head over here to get more info and start your free trial for a month.

Hulu: Similar to Netflix, Hulu offers hundreds of TV shows and movies for streaming for around the same price as Netflix. The only drawbacks to Hulu is it is not available on as many devices and it has a lot of foreign TV shows. If that is your thing, though, it might be perfect to you. One bonus it has over Netflix is it has current seasons of many TV shows available, instead of being one season behind, although they are sometimes slow to load onto the program and can take a couple weeks after the episode premiers on TV.

Amazon Prime is a yearly service that allows you to stream TV shows and movies. For $89.95 a year (the cost of some cable packages per month!), you have access to new releases and thousands of other TV shows and Movies. You also get free 2 day shipping for many items on Amazon. Amazon Prime can be split between 5 people, so you could really save a lot buy teaming up with others to pay for it. However, if you are a student you can get a prime membership for 50% off. Also they run specials on Amazon Prime memberships all the time. You can get a free trial of Amazon Prime now, so head over and check out all the benefits of having an Amazon Prime membership!

If you don’t want to stream entertainment, there is always the public library. Most larger and even some smaller libraries offer movies and TV shows available for free checkout.
