5 Reasons Budgeting is Easier Than You Think (1)

Do you ever catch yourself daydreaming about your future? Do you imagine a beautiful home, kids playing in the yard and you are relaxing without a care in the world? Or maybe you dream of traveling to Italy and taking a tour through “wine country” with your husband. Whatever your dream is, I want you to know there is a way to make it a reality. If you have goals of where you want to be, a budget will get you there.

What people who live without a budget don’t realize is, budgeting is actually REALLY easy! For some reason, budgets, “the b-word,” scares people. Before I started budgeting, I thought it was this complicated, mystery of a process that only rich people knew how to do. I was terrified of facing my debt and felt extremely incompetent about money.

Turns out, literally, anybody can budget. Budgeting is an extremely simple process. The hangup most people have is changing their spending habits and sticking to their budget. If you can master both, you will be in Italy in no time.

1. A budget only requires the math skills of a third grader (no offense third graders).

At its core, a budget is simply all the money you bring in per month minus all the money you spend in a month.

Income minus Expenses equals Budget.

This is extremely basic math. If you made it through third grade, then you can be in charge of your own household budget.

This gave me great relief when I realized I didn’t need a degree in finance to properly manage my money. What complicates budgeting for people is getting all of your information organized and tracking your expenses throughout the month…you know, the things that require effort.

Good news for those minimal effort folks out there….

2. There are tons of budgeting apps out there to do the majority of the work for you.

If you don’t know me well yet, let me start by saying, I STRONGLY believe you should begin budgeting with a handwritten budget. I believe this for multiple reasons that you can read more about here. That being said, once you become proficient at budgeting, I am not against you getting an App to take over the bulk of the leg-work for you. This will help keep you on track for the long-haul.

We live in an age where people are looking for simple, clear and automated. This has created the invention of some very efficient budgeting apps such as EveryDollar, YNAB (you need a budget), Mint, Calendar Budget, the list goes on and on. Once you have gotten your budget set up and have been consistently following through with it, an automated app will be a great option to simplify the process for you.

3. Great news! You are only budgeting for your household; not a multi-billion dollar corporation.

I don’t know why, but as normal people, we tend to over complicate things. When I was dreading putting a budget together for the first time, I kept thinking about all the categories, little expenses, debts, utilities, etc. that I was going to have to keep track of. This seemed so overwhelming and was almost paralyzing at times. How would I even sift through all that information to get it planned and organized?

Once I just dove in head first and got my categories organized, I realized I had a very basic household to run. This wasn’t rocket science, I wasn’t tracking the budget for Apple; I was just writing down my monthly expenses.Don’t overthink this. There are only so many ways you are currently spending your money every month. It will not be difficult to organize your spending into budget form.

4. No matter where you currently are with your money, you can start budgeting today.

There is no waiting list or qualifications that you need to meet to start a budget. You can begin immediately! Trust me, I should know.

I remember sitting in the hotel room (that we borrowed money to pay for while waiting to move into the home we just purchased, that we borrowed money to pay for) with paper, pen, bills and bank statements in front of me. All I could bring myself to do was stare at them.

I was completely crippled by fear, feelings of overwhelm and inadequacy. This sounds stupid saying it out loud, but I didn’t feel qualified to budget. I sat there with $320,000 of debt and I was going to budget?

That’s when I realized the beauty of budgets. Budgets don’t care what your current situation is or how you got there. All that matters is writing down income minus expenses, and starting down a path where you decide where your money goes.

5. You are the boss of your money!

This is my favorite part of budgeting….I AM THE BOSS. Have you ever wanted to own your own business? Guess what?! You already do! The business is called “your financial life,” and you are CEO. Nobody (aside from your spouse) can tell you where your money should go. You are in complete control, and you get to decide what happens to your income.

Are there going to be things that you have to pay for every month as part of normal living expenses? Yes, but you can manage those expenses to shape your budget into meeting the goals you have set for yourself. If you want to save money by having a lower mortgage payment, you can decide to downsize. Whatever change you want to make, you are in charge of it.

Budgeting is all about choices, and you are in control of those choices.
