What is the Spiritual Meaning of Flowers in the Bible?

There are several different spiritual meanings we can glean from the Bible verses that mention flowers. Let’s look at each of these six observations about flowers more closely.

Bible Verses About Flowers describe the Splendor of God’s Creation

One of the most powerful ways flowers are mentioned in the Bible is through displaying God’s beauty and majesty in creation. There are hundreds of thousands of plants and flowers all over the world–and the Lord, in all of his power, created each one. Flowers are a vast array of colors, shapes and sizes, which highlights the wonderful creativity of our great God.

Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. Luke 12:27

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. Genesis 1:11

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. Genesis 1:29

These seed-bearing plants most certainly include budding flowers in all of their splendor!

The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.

Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.

The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God. Isaiah 35:1-2

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 1 Chronicles 29:11

Bible Verses About Flowers describe the Brevity of Life

Flowers in the Bible also describe how brief and fleeting our lives on earth are. Have you ever received a bouquet of flowers from a loved one? Those beautiful bouquets usually last only a few days. Scripture uses the analogy of flowers to depict how short our lives are–and how much we need to rely on the Lord for strength and hope.

A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. Isaiah 40:6

The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. Isaiah 40:7

“Mortals, born of woman, are of few days and full of trouble. They spring up like flowers and wither away; like fleeting shadows, they do not endure. Job 14:1-2

The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. Psalm 103:15-16

But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. James 1:10-11

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” Isaiah 40:8

This Scripture in Isaiah 40:8 reminds us that even though humans are mortal and finite, the Word of the Lord lasts forever.

Bible Verses About Flowers describe the Fate of the Wicked

The brevity of life is also highlighted in Scripture through the actions of the wicked. Those who ignore the Word of God and live in blatant immorality run the risk of cutting their brief lives even shorter.

But the wicked will perish: Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke. Psalm 37:20

This is what the Lord says to me: “I will remain quiet and will look on from my dwelling place, like shimmering heat in the sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.” For, before the harvest, when the blossom is gone and the flower becomes a ripening grape, he will cut off the shoots with pruning knives, and cut down and take away the spreading branches. Isaiah 18:4-5

How long will the land lie parched and the grass in every field be withered? Because those who live in it are wicked, the animals and birds have perished. Moreover, the people are saying, “He will not see what happens to us.” Jeremiah 12:4

He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. Isaiah 40:23-24

Bible Verses About Flowers describe the love between Husbands and Wives

The book of Song of Songs includes several references to various flowers in the Bible, and beautifully depicts the love between King Solomon and his beloved bride. Flowers in this book of the Bible represent their flourishing love for each other.

My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of En Gedi. Song of Songs 1:14

I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the young women. Song of Songs 2:1-2

The mandrakes send out their fragrance, and at our door is every delicacy, both new and old, that I have stored up for you, my beloved. Song of Songs 7:13

Bible Verses About Flowers describe Spiritual Renewal and Revival

These Bible verses about flowers remind us that even when we make mistakes and turn from God, we can always experience revival and spiritual renewal when we repent of our sins and seek his face. When we do this, we will flourish spiritually and bloom like a beautiful lily.

“Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.” Isaiah 55:13

I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom like a lily. Like a cedar of Lebanon he will send down his roots… Hosea 14:5

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. Psalm 92:13

Although this passage in Psalm 92 is referring to palm and cedar trees, both of these plants also produce flowers.

Bible Verses About Flowers describe God’s Provision for his People

Flowers in the Bible also represent God’s loving provision for his people.

Jesus in his famous Sermon on the Mount spoke powerfully about flowers and their spiritual significance.

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Matthew 6:28-30

38 Encouraging Bible Verses About Flowers (with Free Printable) - (8)

This is one of my favorite passages about flowers to reflect on. If God clothes the grassy fields with a rainbow of splendor, (which blooms one day and then shrivels in the sun), how much more are we, as his precious children, clothed with his splendor and strength?

We are clothed in his beauty that will never wilt.

We are clothed in his strength that will never fail.

We are clothed in his power that will never diminish.

We are clothed with Christ himself (Romans 13:14).

That means we are forever wrapped in his loving arms of grace. He will never leave us naked or shivering with shame. He clothes us with worth, value and honor.

“Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Acts 14:17

In this passage, Paul and Barnabas were preaching to the people of Lystra about the good news of the Gospel. They were explaining that God is the one who showers kindness on his people and supplies them with everything they need.

It was very expensive to obtain, and the disciples did not think it was wise for Mary of Bethany (the sister of Lazarus) to pour such a great amount of this perfume on the feet of Jesus (John 12:3). The broom bush in Hebrew is translated as a broom-plant, although some Bible translations refer to the broom bush as “juniper”. The broom bush is part of the genus Cytisus, which is a desert shrub rather than an actual juniper tree (which is from the genus Juniperus).

In this passage, the prophet Elijah fled from Jezebel and rested under a broom bush. Later in the chapter, the Lord spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper and gave him strength for his journey (1 Kings 19:7-9).
