3 Promises That Are Essential to Christianity - Open the Bible (2024)

Daily Devotional Details

“I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:3 (NIV)

The problem with trouble-free faith is that it forgets the promise of Jesus’ second coming.

When Christ calls the disciples to faith in this critical hour of their lives, as He is about to leave them and go to the cross, He grounds their faith in three promises.

The promise of the resurrection
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” (14:18).

The promise of the Holy Spirit
“He lives with you and will be in you” (14:17).

The promise of Christ’s return
“I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (14:3).

These promises are central to Christian faith. There is no true Christianity without them.

The promises that Jesus gives His disciples are crucial, not only to understanding the central message of Christianity, but also to helping us overcome our difficulties in this fallen world. The world offers no hope outside of Christ, but in Christ we have all we need. The resurrection provides the answer to the problem of death. The Holy Spirit provides the strength we need to overcome our sin and grow in holiness. Christ’s return provides hope that Jesus will eventually make all things right.

How do the promises of Christ help you throughout the day?
