2D scans are the traditional black and white images that are most common. 4D is the ability to watch the the 3D image in real time. HD LIVE or FRV (Fetal Realistic View) is the newest technology which allows us to provide images with unparalleled quality. This is the technology in use at our facility.

A regular 2-D ultrasound creates a cross-sectional view of your baby. In a 3-D ultrasound, many 2-D images are taken from various angles and pieced together to form a three-dimensional image. This looks more like what you're used to seeing in a typical photograph.

4D is the most recent ultrasound technology to date. It's a live real-time view of your baby moving in your belly. Realistic View or HD refers to the coloring of the images. As this technology has improved we are able to show you not only your baby's features, but their expressions and their personality.

The HD LIVE has also changed the skin tone from the sepia (orangey colour) of the usual 3D and 4D scans to a pinkish colouring along with surface rendering which smooths the images. It can also light up the baby's face giving you a better view of any expression like yawning or smiling that your baby may show.

2D ultrasounds

All modern ultrasounds allow for high-quality, still images. However, HD ultrasounds have the highest quality of all the options, which increases parents' demands for them.

We offer our 3D/4D/HD Ultrasound sessions throughout the pregnancy. However, we recommend that you wait until at least 20 weeks. If you plan on having only one Ultrasound examination, we would recommend having the examination performed between the 27th and 33nd week of the pregnancy.

With a 4D ultrasound, you can experience the wonder of seeing your baby move – you can see your baby move their arms and their legs, smile, yawn, swallow, open their eyes, and even suck their thumb.

Unfortunately no, insurance does not cover this as it's a limited diagnostic procedure and is not intended to be a replacement for your physician ordered ultrasound. These are all elective ultrasounds and not medically needed by your health care provider.

Comparatively, 4D ultrasounds allow for a live-streaming video of the images, showing the motion of the fetal heart wall or valves, as well as the current blood that is flowing through various vessels.

This type of ultrasound can show the fetus in the womb more realistically. In addition, 4D ultrasound has more advantages over other types, which is that it can see moving images of the fetus. Inspection with this 4-dimensional method does have the most advanced advantages compared to 2D and 3D.
