First, surveys are low paying.

You can spend 20 minutes of your time answering questions and only make $2.

Some opportunities are higher paying that others and it does all add up.

Consider you spend 4 hours Friday-Sunday taking surveys at around $5/hour.

You’ll make $60/weekend or $240 in a month.

There’s potential to make much more though.

2. Working in Panels

There are studies and panels which can fetch you $40 to $400 each.

You can mix those in with lower paying surveys to instantly lift your income.

Examples of panel companies:

• User Interviews

So, panels and studies are a more time-intensive type of survey.

They usually take an hour or longer, sometimes spanning several days (like an hour a day for 3 days in a row).

They may also require more feedback and participation in a group setting, one-on-one interview or live web interview.

Pay rate:

Research associates can start at $48,000/year full-time with research scientists and analysts earning more.

First, know that your listing will be more desirable if your entire place is able to be rented out, versus just a room.

That’s because a lot of people travel with groups, with family members or spouses and pets, etc.

More space is just better and a preference for many people.

So, limiting renting to just a room in your house could mean less money for you.

Also think about strangers circulating throughout your home over a long period of time.

There’s a lot of cleaning and maintenance required for short-term rental properties.

You don’t have to do this cleaning and maintenance yourself of course, as most hosts usually hire an affordable cleaning company but consider the cost of this service.

This and other considerations should be reviewed thoroughly before you make the decision to rent out your entire space or just a room.

How Often to Rent Out Your Space

Next, consider how often you want to rent out your space.

You can make a healthy side income just renting out your space on the weekend.

Weekends are also a busy time for rentals, as people are traveling a lot on weekends.

You can also double or triple your income if you allow weekday rentals.

Think about all this and make your decision before you finalize your listing.

Expenses for Transitioning Your Space to Short-Term Rental

Then, there’s the expense of transitioning your space to a short-term rental unit and costs like:

• Furnishings
• Linens
• Cleaning and maintenance
• Small repairs, if applicable
• And, other costs

Consider your personal experience when you visit a hotel and try to recreate that same feeling for your guests.

Homeowners Insurance and other Implications

Lastly and most importantly, check with your homeowners insurance and homeowners association where you live, to make sure you are allowed to list your home as a short-term rental.

Some home insurance companies don’t allow it.

And, it can be frowned upon by HOA’s too.

Pay rate:

You can rent a room for $50/night and rent an entire home for $350/night (these are just examples).

This is dependent on many things like the size of the space, area, and other factors.

How much you can make total is also dependent on how often you rent out your space and if you’ll rent the entire home or a single room.

For example, weekend rentals at the $50/night for renting a room, could mean an extra $150/week if you rented Friday-Sunday.

That’s about $600/month in extra income, passively!

If you rented out your entire space for $350/night for weekends, that would equal out to $1,050 per weekend or $4,200 per month!

And, if you aren’t a homeowner, you can still do this and companies like AirBNB support it!

The process is almost the same as if you owned the home and it’s called AirBNB rental arbitrage.
You just want to make sure your landlord approves and you’re good to go!

10. Rent Your RV

Renting out your RV, like your travel trailer or Class A motorhome can make you money, rather than just sitting your RV in your driveway for most of the year.

You can go through a company called RVShare to make money passively renting out your RV.

You can make an extra up to $22,000/year or more renting out your RV.

Partner with the company Turo to earn an extra income renting out your car.

This is perfect if you’re a homebody like me and stay in mostly, on the weekends.

Instead of your car sitting in your driveway unused, get paid by guests to rent it out!

According to Turo, the average rate is around $706/month renting out your car.

That’s enough to pay your car note and then some!

12. Sell on Ebay

Ebay is an online marketplace where you can sell just about anything.

I use Ebay to sell odds and ends around the house around the holidays for an extra $300 to $500 and then I use that money to buy holiday gifts.

I recently started using Ebay again and after finding a hot product, made around $7,500 in the first week!

You get exposed to Ebay’s huge audience and it’s perfect for retail arbitrage, online arbitrage, or selling things around your house.

There are part-time and full-time sellers on Ebay.

It’s not unusual to make $1,000 per month part-time working weekends only.

• Find competitors doing very well and emulate their success
• Don’t be afraid to try the promoted listings

Selling on Amazon is almost like selling on Ebay.

Amazon is much smaller than Ebay but outperforming them, as one of the largest marketplace leaders in the world.

That means if you sell on Amazon you will have a lot less competition.

Weekend sellers can expect to make up to $1,000/month or more.

When I tried Amazon selling many years ago, I started making $3,000/month almost instantly.

Arbitrage is taking advantage of price differences in the market to make a profit.

When you do this online, it means you are sourcing products and then reselling them.

For example, you could source a desk for $40 at Walmart.com and resell on Ebay for $100, making a $60 profit.

Now, to put some further background to the example…

The desk you sell from Walmart.com is on sale at Walmart.

And, it’s selling on Ebay (the same price) with evidence of past sales (looking at Sold listings) in the $100-range.

This is what’s going on behind the scenes.

At any point in time you can find the same product in two different places at two different prices.

If the margin is large enough, buy from one place and sell on another, just like the Walmart/Ebay example.

Pay rate:

This depends on many things like the number of products you sell, the competitiveness of the product and other determining factors.

Some new sellers can even go way beyond this.

Your success is going to be based on most notably, your competition.
