Passive income allows you to receive an income over and over again from something you only did once.

This is where a lot of “earn while you sleep” quotes originate. Passive income is completely differentto active income streams. Active income is where you work and are paid for your efforts only one time. As soon as you stop working, you don’t continue to be paid. This is common in traditional employment. As soon as you stop working or take time off, you stop being paid.

What are the benefits?

Passive income allows you to keep earning after only putting the effort in once. This means you could move onto another project but still continue to be paid from the project before.

Also, you can set up a number of different passive income streams at one time. So in contrast to an active income where you only have a certain number of hours in the day to work and be paid, passive income allows you to have 2, 3 or more streams set up at the same time so you can be earning from all 3 in one go!

What’s more, because they’re passive, you could still earn even when you’re out with friends, on holiday, taking a nap etc. So what’s not to love?!

There are so many passive income ideas to choose from. So instead of trailing the internet to find worthwhile ideas, I have compiled a list of the most effective ways you can earn a passive income, even as a beginner.

Digital printing or product business

More recently, this has become a very popular method to earn a passive income. Digital prints can range from wall art, to Instagram filters and even party decorations.

As soon as you have uploaded a digital design for sale, customers can continue to purchase until you remove it.

Also, as it’s a digital download this means you do not need to hold any stock or worry about shipping. A complete win-win in my opinion!

Stocks and shares

Investing in stocks and shares is definitely an area most people are unsure about but want to become involved with.

With the right investment strategy, and I recommend you speak to a professional, rather than rely on blog posts alone, this can be a very easy way to earn a passive income.

In most cases, you’ll purchase the shares for a low price and resell when they’re higher to make a profit.

There is also dividend shares, where you’ll receive a % from the company each year in line with how many shares you hold in that company. Aside from the inital research into the company and purchase of the shares, you cansit back and wait to receive the income at the end of the year.

Blogging and Affiliate Marketing

I have put these two together as they essentially work hand in hand. Although, it is possible to earn a passive income through affiliate marketing without a blog.

The reason I have linked the two together is because some of the larger affiliate programmes require you to have your own self-hosted website. Further, the majority of income earned through affiliate marketing, is through blogs and websites which have recommended products or services to their readers to purchase.

For instance, if you write a post about your new favourite handbag and provide an affiliate link, each time someone purchases the handbag through your link, you will receive a % commission from each and every sale.

Of course, this can quite easily be scaled up by including a number of links to different products and services you love.

E-courses and E-books

More recently, it feels as though everyone has an ebook or ecourse of some sort. Even though I say this, I don’t believe the market is too saturated or that any books or courses you create are not worth your time.

Everyone has their own perspective on whatever topic is being taught, so just because a course has already been created, doesn’t mean that it can’t be improved upon or that you won’t have anything valuable to contribute.

Personally, I believe fictional ebooks are quite an untapped market and there is definitely room for growth. So if you prefer writing romance novels to informational books, you can definitely do this and still earn a passive income. This is also a great option if you would prefer not to have a blog.

Buy real estate to rent out

Purchasing real estate, renting it out and earning an income each month, was definitely the first time I had ever really come across passive income.

To be honest, I’m not sure I even knew it was ‘passive income’. To me it was a gateway to being able to earn an income each month with very little work required on my behalf.

A property portfolio is very common amongst wealthy individuals. Whether they have purchased property to rent out, or just to resell at a higher price and pocket the profit, this is a very lucrative way to earn a passive income with little effort.

However, this option does have a higher entry level threshold compared to some of the other ideas mentioned, especially compared to selling digital products which only really costs your time.

Start a podcast

Podcasts have become very popular over the last few years and they span over so many different topics and areas. There really is a podcast for everyone now-a-days.

As soon as you’ve built an engaged community around your podcast, you’re able to include ads on your episode. Once the episode has been released it will forever be available for other listeners to hear the ads and act.

Open a high interest % savings account

Savings accounts are a perfect option to earning a passive income, especially as a beginner.

Once your account is open, you’ll earn interest throughout the year and at the end off the year you’ll receive the accrued interest straight into your bank account.

However, to see a real income from interest, you will need to have a lot of savings in the first place, but everyone starts somewhere and your savings can easily be built up over time.

Sell photos for commercial use or as stock photography

Hopefully, you’re starting to see the pattern. Once digital creations are made and listed for purchase, sales can be made with no real further involvement from you.
